Anna Kendrick has finally opened up about her highly private relationship status.
In a candid conversation on the October 23, 2024 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kendrick revealed that she is currently single and discussed the heartbreaking details behind her last breakup.
While talking about the plot of her 2022 film Alice Darling, the actress explained how the film was inspired by her real-life experience in a long-term emotionally abusive relationship.
Anna addressed her breakup with her unnamed ex, which occurred close to the shooting of the film, and described how her once-loving relationship became toxic towards the end of it. She shared,
“I had just gotten out of a relationship that was extremely similar to the movie… It didn’t follow the traditional pattern… The relationship lasted seven years, but it felt like an overnight switch, and that continued for about a year… It came out of absolutely nowhere”.
The Twilight star further discussed the internal struggle faced by many victims of abusive relationships, where they often believe the fault lies within themselves rather than recognizing the fault of their abuser. Reflecting on her own experience, she shared,
“I had so much love and trust for that person, so I thought it had to be me. Like, if one of us is crazy, it must be me. So it was very, very difficult to actually go, no, I think this is him. I think this is his stuff. I turned my life completely upside down trying to fix whatever was wrong with me”.
Anna Kendrick Attributes Therapy As Key To Breaking Free From Her Ex’s Toxic Cycle
Anna concluded her breakup tale by revealing how couples therapy empowered her to confront her abusive partner. She recounted a pivotal moment after a few sessions when she realized the extent of the emotional abuse she had been enduring.
Overwhelmed, she lashed out at her partner in front of the therapist during one of their sessions. Reflecting on the incident, she shared,
“I sent the therapist an email being like, I’m so embarrassed. I’m so sorry. I know I need to control myself. And he called me, which he hadn’t done before, and was like, No, I’m so proud of you. And that’s when I knew, something has shifted. Things ended pretty quickly after that”.
The identity of the man Anna referenced in her recent podcast interview remains undisclosed, as she chose not to name anyone specifically.
However, Anna Kendrick has previously been linked to English filmmaker Edgar Wright, with whom she was in a relationship from 2009 to 2013, as well as cinematographer Ben Richardson, whom she dated from 2014 to 2020, and comedian Bill Hader, who was her partner from 2020 to 2022.
