Pop sensation Lady Gaga’s engagement to longtime love Michael Polansky wasn’t your typical fairytale moment—there were no grand gestures or flashy diamonds involved.
In an exclusive interview with BBC Magazine on March 6, 2025, the Die With A Smile star opened up about their special moment, which quietly took place sometime in 2024.
Reflecting on how the engagement first came about, Gaga shared that years before the actual proposal, Michael had asked her exactly how she would like it to happen. She said,
“A long time ago, we were in the backyard, and he asked me, If I ever proposed to you, like, how do I do that? And I just said, just get a blade of grass from the backyard and wrap it around my finger and that will make me so happy”.
Turns out, Michael was indeed listening. When the big moment finally arrived, he kept it beautifully simple, with no traditional diamond ring in sight. The songstress shared,
“Michael actually proposed to me with these blades of grass in the backyard of my house. As this happy thing was happening for me to get engaged at 38… I was thinking about what it took to get [us] to this moment”.
Lady Gaga Turned Her Unconventional Proposal Into A Hit Song
Just one day after opening up about her unconventional engagement, Lady Gaga released her highly anticipated new album, Mayhem, on March 7, 2025. And as it turns out, her romance with Michael served as a major source of inspiration for the project.
One standout track, titled Blade of Grass, is a heartfelt nod to the unique backyard proposal that started it all. In the emotional lyrics, Gaga sings,
“Come on and wrap that blade of grass / Around my finger like a cast… I’ve been so lonely in this field / Fightin’ a battle with no shield / Come on and wrap that blade of grass / And we’ll make it last”.
On March 7, 2025, during a candid interview on the Australian radio show Will & Woody, the Bad Romance singer opened up about the thoughtful sacrifices her fiancé makes to support her career, even during the most inconvenient times. She shared,
“When I’m with my man, we’ll be doing something and if I’ve been working all day, and then I have another idea, he’s like, just go do it. He knows I have to go write the song. I sleep with the phone by the bed and so sometimes, Michael will just [wake up] and hear me humming”.
Lady Gaga and Michael Polansky’s love story first began in early 2020, and after four years of dating, they took the next big step in their relationship. The couple got engaged in 2024, officially announcing the happy news that September while attending the Venice Film Festival in Italy.
From backyard blades of grass to chart-topping ballads, Gaga and Michael are proving that true love doesn’t need diamonds to shine.
With a fiancé who fuels both her heart and her art, it’s clear Lady Gaga is living her very own love song.
