Marlon Wayans revealed the real reason for never tying the knot in an exclusive interview with The New York Times, published on May 4, 2024. Talking to journalist David Marchese, the actor and comedian opened up about his decision of making his mother Elvira Altheia the only important woman in his life.
In the interview, Marlon talked about his mother’s death in 2020 and how the grief impacted his life, including his marital status. He said,
“My mother’s death broke me. It shattered me into a million pieces, because that was my girl. I never got married, because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman. I never wanted my mother to feel second to any woman”.
On being asked by David whether his mother was the reason he never got married, Marlon further added,
“Oh, absolutely… Mom was very needy. I told my mother on her deathbed, I never got married because I always wanted you to be my No. 1 girl. Take that to heaven with you”.
Fans flooded his Instagram post with heartwarming and supportive comments. One comment read,
“Got me 🥹 in my car and calling my moms. Wonderful interview!”
Marlon Wayans was speculated to have been married in the past to his long-term girlfriend Angelica Zachary, whom he dated for over two decades from 1992 to 2013. The former couple also share two children together. However, Marlon has now made it clear that he was never married to anyone.
While marriage is a traditional path, it’s not always the only expression of love and commitment. And Marlon’s dedication to his mother, though unique, reflects a deep and enduring love.
