Looks like the tension between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton is back in the headlines, again, thanks to a fresh royal tell-all.
In his new biography, Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, royal expert Tom Quinn reveals what really went down between the sisters-in-law during Meghan’s 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry.
According to an anonymous palace staffer, the clash between Markle and Middleton was over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress.
And despite reports at the time that framed the Duchess of Sussex as the villain who made Kate cry, the insider claims both women were deeply emotional during the heated exchange. The source told Quinn,
“I can tell you that all the papers and commentators got this wrong, the truth is that as with many of these spats between sisters, brothers or even sisters-in-law, both sides were really upset”.
The insider further alleged that it wasn’t just Meghan at fault, both women butted heads and were equally emotionally distraught. They added,
“The truth is that… Meghan said a few things she regretted and Kate said a few things she later regretted. But it was all in the heat of the moment. Both women were crying their eyes out!”
Prince Harry Backs Up Insider Claims About The Pre-Wedding Meltdown
In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Prince Harry opened up about how Meghan was left in tears after a tense exchange with the future Queen Consort. Recalling the bridesmaid dress drama, he wrote,
“Kate texted Meghan to discuss Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress four days before the wedding… and said it was too big, too long, too baggy… Meghan replied, I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8 a.m. here, at KP [Kensington Palace]. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered…”
But apparently, that suggestion didn’t sit well with Kate, who allegedly insisted that alterations weren’t enough, the dresses needed to be remade entirely. The situation escalated, and Harry said he came home to find Meghan “sobbing on the kitchen floor”.
The dress debacle was later confirmed by Ajay Mirpui, the tailor behind the scenes, who told The Daily Mail in a 2023 interview that he wasn’t aware of any direct argument between Meghan and Kate but did confirm the chaos, saying,
“They were faced with a problem like anyone gets at a wedding, with last-minute hitches. I can understand… it’s nerve-wracking… All six bridesmaids’ dresses had to be fixed, and we did it. Our team had to work tooth and nail for four days”.
Earlier, in an exclusive March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Suits star revealed that following the tense exchange, Kate eventually apologized by bringing her flowers and a handwritten note expressing regret for the things she had said.
Addressing the widespread narrative that she had made Kate cry, when, in fact, it was the other way around, Meghan explained,
“I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details of that, because she apologized. What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do but that happened to me”.

Fans Unconvinced By New Confessions, Meghan Still Seen As The Villain
Despite the revelations in the new book, the online community remained unconvinced. Many netizens questioned the credibility of the insider’s claims and continued to believe that Markle was at fault, accusing her of making Middleton cry. Some such comments read,
